“캐시를 위해 내가(에드거 린튼) 뭘 할 수 있을까? 내가 그녀를 남겨두고 이 세상을 떠나야 하나? 난 린튼이 히스클리프의 아들이라는 걸 전혀 상관하지 않겠어. 나한테서 캐시를 빼앗아 가든 말이야. 그가 내가 잃은 것에 대해 캐시를 위로할 수 있다면, 히스클리프가 자신의 목적을 달성하고 나의 마지막 희망인 캐시를 강탈해가며 승리감을 누린다 해도 난 상관하지 않아! 하지만 린튼이 무가치하고, 아버지가 잘 다루는 도구에 불과한 허약한 녀석이라면 난 캐시를 그에게 넘겨줄 수 없어! 그리고 그녀의 쾌활한 기운을 짓누르는 것이 괴롭긴 하지만, 내가 살아있는 한 그녀를 슬프게 하는 걸 견뎌내야 하며, 내가 죽을 땐 그녀를 홀로 남겨두어야만 하거든. 내 사랑스런 딸! 내가 죽기 전에 난 그 아이를 하나님께 맡기고 땅에 묻는 것이 낫겠어.”
6월인데도 주인님의 몸은 쇠약해지고 있었답니다. 그분은 자기 수입의 일부를 아가씨의 재산으로 매년 챙겨두었지만, 조상 때부터 내려오는 이 집을 그녀가 보유하길 - 혹은 적어도 시집을 간 후라도 돌아올 수 있기를 - 당연히 바라셨거든요. 그렇게 할 수 있는 유일한 희망은 자신의 상속인(린튼 히스클리프)과 딸 캐시를 결혼시키는 것이라고 생각하셨거든요. 그분은 린튼이 자신처럼 빠른 속도로 건강을 잃고 있다는 걸 전혀 알지 못하셨어요. (25장)
What can I do for Cathy? How must I quit her? I’d not care one moment for Linton being Heathcliff’s son; nor for his taking her from me, if he could console her for my loss. I’d not care that Heathcliff gained his ends, and triumphed in robbing me of my last blessing! But should Linton be unworthy—only a feeble tool to his father—I cannot abandon her to him! 아버지와 딸이 만나는 곳에 함께 있는 걸 견딜 수 없었기에 저는 15분 정도 침실문 밖에 서있었죠. 다시 침대 옆으로 갈 생각은 감히 하지도 않았죠. 하지만 모두가 차분한 분위기였어요. 캐서린의 절망은 아버지의 기쁨처럼 말이 없었답니다. 겉으로 보기엔 그녀가 그를 차분하게 용기를 돋우는 것 같았고, 아버지는 황홀해 하여 확대된 눈을 치켜들어 그녀의 얼굴에 고정시켰어요.
그분은 더없이 행복하게 죽었습니다, 록우드 씨. 그렇게 죽었어요. 캐서린의 볼에 입맞춤을 하면서 이렇게 중얼거렸답니다. “난 네 엄마한테 간다. 귀여운 아이야, 너도 우리한테 오게 될 거다!” 그러고 나서 다시는 움직이지도 말하지도 않았습니다. 그러나 그의 맥박은 감지할 수 없을 정도로 멈췄고, 그의 영혼이 지상을 떠날 때까지 황홀하고 기쁨에 빛나는 그의 응시는 계속되었답니다. 아무도 그분이 돌아가신 정확한 시각을 알 수는 없었지만, 고통의 몸부림은 전혀 없었답니다.
변호사 그린 씨는 그레인지 저택에 속한 모든 것과 사람들에 관해 자기 마음대로 지시하고 나섰습니다. 그는 저를 제외하곤 모든 하인들에게 그만 두라고 통지했죠. 그는 에드거 린튼을 자기 부인의 옆이 아니라, 예배당 안에 있는 가족묘에 묻어야 한다고 주장할 정도로 위임받은 권한을 수행하고자 했어요. 하지만 유언장이 있어서 그렇게까지는 하지 못했지요. 그리고 유언장에 적힌 지시사항을 어겨서는 안 된다는 저의 거센 항의도 있었고요. 서둘러 장례식을 끝냈습니다. 캐서린, 그러니까 이제는 린튼 히스클리프의 부인은 아버지의 시신이 집을 떠날 때까지는 그레인지에 머물 수 있었습니다. I couldn’t abide to be present at their meeting. I stood outside the chamber-door a quarter of an hour, and hardly ventured near the bed, then. All was composed, however: Catherine’s despair was as silent as her father’s joy. She supported him calmly, in appearance; and he fixed on her features his raised eyes that seemed dilating with ecstasy.
He died blissfully, Mr. Lockwood: he died so. Kissing her cheek, he murmured ‘I am going to her; and you, darling child, shall come to us!’ and never stirred or spoke again; but continued that rapt, radiant gaze, till his pulse imperceptibly stopped and his soul departed. None could have noticed the exact minute of his death, it was so entirely without a struggle.
Mr. Green took upon himself to order everything and everybody about the place. He gave all the servants but me, notice to quit. He would have carried his delegated authority to the point of insisting that Edgar Linton should not be buried beside his wife, but in the chapel, with his family. There was the will, however, to hinder that, and my loud protestations against any infringement of its directions. The funeral was hurried over; Catherine, Mrs. Linton Heathcliff now, was suffered to stay at the Grange till her father’s corpse had quitted it. (Chapter 28)
