줄거리
Edgar Linton은 Nelly를 시켜 Linton을 Cathy의 조랑말에 태워 Wuthering Heights로 보낸다. Cathy가 만날까봐 Linton이 간곳을 이야기 하지 말라고 하고 갑작스럽게 Linton에게 아버지의 존재를 알리며 Wuthering Heights 갈 것임을 알린다. 아버지에 대한 이야기를 들은 적이 없던 Linton에게 Nelly는 거짓말로 둘러대고,  Linton이 가길 거부하자 곧 돌아오게 될 것이며 자신과 Cathy가 찾아갈 것이라는 등의 거짓말 다짐을 해준다. Wuthering Heights로가면서 그곳에 대해 좋게 말했고 또한 히스클리프에 대해서도 좋은 생각을 갖도록 말한다. 자신과 다른 아버지를 이상히 여기는 Linton에게 눈곱만큼도 닮지 않았다고 생각하면서도 별로 닮지 않았다고 거짓을 말한다. Wuthering Heights에 도착한 Linton의 외모를 보고 Heathcliff는 곱상한 외모에 실망을 한다. 그는 Linton이 장차 Thrushcross Grange의 주인이 될 것이며 그집을 자신이 물려받을 때까지 죽어선 안된다고 넬리에게 말하였다. 그리하여 그는 Linton가의 후손에게 본래 자신들 조상의 땅을 갈게 하는 쾌감을 맛보고 싶다고 하였다. 그가 Linton에게 교육과 음식에 신경을 쓰는 모습을 보며 Nelly는 Heathcliff의 아버지로서의 욕심 때문에 아들이 편안히 지낼 수 있게 되었다고 생각한다. 몰래 빠져나오려는 Nelly를 쫓아가려는 Linton의 울부짖음에 Heathcliff는 빗장을 내려 나가지 못하게 하고 Nelly는 급히 달려 내려온다.

① 376쪽 3행～10행
: Linton을 Wuthering Heights로 보내려는 장면. Linton이 Thrushcross Grange를 떠나 Heathcliff에게 가게 된 이상 Cathy를 Linton과 어울리지 못하게 하고 연락을 끊고 지내겠다는 Edgar Linton의 생각이 나타나 있다.
"As we shall now have no influence over his destiny, good or bad, you must say nothing of where he is gone to my daughter; she cannot associate with him hereafter; and it is better for her to remain in ignorance of his proximity, lest she should be restless, and anxious to visit the Heights ᅳ merely tell her, his father sent for him suddenly, and he has been obliged to leave us."

: 아버지의 존재에 대해 처음 알았다는 Linton의 말에서 Isabella가 아버지란 존재조차 알리지 않았을 정도로 Heathcliff를 얼마나 저주했고 아들을 남편에게 보이지 않으려 했음을 알 수 있다.
"My father?" he cried, in strange perplexity. "Mamma never told me I had a father. Where does he live ? I'd rather stay with uncle."

③ 377쪽 10행～15행
: 아버지의 존재를 숨긴 이유를 궁금히 여기는 Linton에게 Nelly는 사실을 숨기고 거짓말을 한다.
"But why have I not heard of him before?" asked Linton; "why didn't mamma and he live together, as other people do ?"

④ 378쪽 7행～11행
: Edgar Linton과 Nelly는 Wuthering Heights로 가길 거부하는 Linton을달래기 위해 거짓말을 다짐해 준다.
The poor thing was finally got off, with several delusive assurances that his absence should be short, that Mr. Edgar and Cathy would visit him, and other promises, equally ill-founded, which I invented and reiterated at intervals throughout the way.

⑤ 379쪽 14행～21행
: Linton은 자신과 닮지 않은 외모를 가진 아버지에 대해 의구심을 가지게 된다. Heathcliff의 모습은 전혀 찾아 볼 수가 없고 Isabella의 모습만이 남아 있다는 부분.
"Black hair and eyes!" mused Linton. "I can't fancy him. Then I am not like him, am I?"
"Not much," I answered; not a morsel, I thought, surveying with regret the white complexion and slim frame of my companion, and his large languid eyes ᅳ his mother's eyes, save that, unless a morbid touchiness kindled them a moment, they had not a vestige of her sparkling spirit.

: Linton과 Heathcliff가 처음 만나는 장면이다. 아들을 맞는 Heathcliff의 말에서 Isabella와 닮은 Linton을 싫어한다는 것을 알 수 있다.
"God! what a beauty! what a lovely, charming thing" he exclaimed. "Haven't they reared it on snails and sour milk, Nelly? Oh, damn my soul! but that's worse than I expected, and the devil knows I was not sanguine!"

⑦ 383쪽 12행～20
: Heathcliff가 Linton을 싫어하지만 참고 봐주는 이유는 자신이 Thrushcross Grange를 소유하여 지주계층이되어 반대로 Linton가에게 소작을 시키려는데 있음을 보여주는 장면이다. 자신의 아들이기에 데려온것도 있겠지만 그보다 자신의 욕망을 실현시키기 위한 도구로 이용하려는 것을 알 수 있다.
"my son is prospective owner of your place, and I should not wish him to die till I was certain of being his successor. Besides, he's mine, and I want the triumph of seeing my descendant fairly lord of their estates ᅳ my child hiring their children to till their father's lands for wages. That is the sole consideration which can make me endure the whelp. I despise him for himself, and hate him for the memories he revives!

⑧ 384쪽 3행～12행
: Linton의 교육을 위해 가정교사와 계약해놓은 Heathcliff의 모습에서 이제까지 보아왔던 그와는 다른 모습이나 이전에 교양을 쌓고 돌아온 Heathcliff가복수를 위해 Isabella와 결혼한 것을 보면 무언가 다른 생각이 있어서가 아닐까하는 생각이 든다.
I've engaged a tutor also to come three times a week, from twenty miles distance, to teach him what he pleases to learn. I've ordered Hareton to obey him; and in fact, I've arranged everything with a view to preserve the superior and the gentleman in him, above his associates. I do regret, however, that he so little deserves the trouble. If I wished any blessing in the world, it was to find him a worthy object of pride; and I'm bitterly disappointed with the whey-faced whining wretch!"

⑨ 385쪽 14행～21행
: Heathcliff가 Linton이 먹을 음식에 대해 자신(Nelly)에게 조언을 구하여 명령하는 것을 보고 Linton이 허약하기 때문에 잘해줄 것 이라고 생각을 한다.
"Don't mention his mother to me," said the master angrily. "Get him something that he can eat, that's all. ᅳ What is his usual food, Nelly?"
  I suggested boiled milk or tea; and the housekeeper received instructions to prepare some. Come, I reflected, his father's selfishness may contribute to his comfort. He perceives his delicate constitution, and the necessity of treating him tolerably.

⑩ 386쪽 7행～9행
: Linton을 두고 떠나는 Nelly와 쫓아가지 못하도록 막는 Heathcliff의 행동. Linton이 그의 복수를 위해서라도 필요한 존재라는 것을 느꼈다.
  "Don't leave me! I'll not stay here! I'll not stay here"
Then the latch was raised and fell. They did not suffer him to come forth.

나의 생각
앞에서 Hareton을 Wuthering Heights에 두고 Thrushcross Grange로 오면서 Nelly는 Heathcliff와 Hindly에 의해 거칠게 키워지는 것을 보고 가슴아파한다. 그런데 이런 곳으로 Linton을 보내는데 Nelly는 Heathcliff를 인정이 없고, 자상하진 않지만 친아버지로서 잘해줄것이라고 말하고, Wuthering Heights가 Thrushcross Grange처럼 좋은 곳은 아니지만 훌륭한 집이며 Linton의 건강에도 좋을 것이라고 말함으로써 Linton을 보내기 위해 어쩔 수 없었겠지만 Heathcliff의 보호아래서 살아야할 Linton을 보호해주지는 못할망정 오히려 좋은말로 포장하여 보내는 모습에서 비정함마저 느꼈다. 또한 Heathcliff가 Isabella를 닮은 것 자체로도 싫지만 그가 Linton에게 해주며  아들을 세심히 챙겨주는 모습은 Thrushcross Grange를 소유하려는 Heathcliff의 욕망을 이루어주는 하나의 수단에 불과함을 느꼈다. 앞으로 Linton이 Heathcliff가 원하는대로 만들어 줄지가 궁금하다.
