1. 줄거리 <10장>

4주 동안이나 병석에 누워 있던 Lookwood씨는 책을 읽기에는 아직 기력이 없지만, Nelly에게 이전에 하던 이야기를 이어서 듣고 싶어한다. 그가 앓는 동안 Heathcliff가 몇 번 다녀갔다. Lookwood씨는 Nelly를 불러 지난번의 이야기를 이어서 해 달라고 한다.
Nelly는 Catherine이 Edgar가 결혼을 하게 되면서 Thrushcross저택으로 함께 가게 됐고 그 들이 결혼 한지 1년 쯤 지났을 어느 날 전혀 다른 모습을 한 Heathcliff가 돌아와 Nelly를 통해 Catherine에게 누가 잠시 보기를 원한다고 전해달라고 부탁한다. Nelly는 망설이다가 그 이야기를 Catherine에게 전하고 Catherine은 그를 만나러 가고 그가 Heathcliff라는 것을 알고 기뻐하는데 그 모습을 지켜보는 그녀의 남편 Edgar는 못마땅해 한다. Heathcliff는 그 부부와 차를 마시면서 그가 Wuthering Heights에 묶게 될 것이라 말하고, 그 이후에도 Catherine과 Heathcliff는 Edgar의 여동생인 Isabella와 함께 만나는 일이 있었는데, 그 사이 Isabella는 Heathcliff를 좋아하게 되어 Isabella는 점점 가족들에게 화를 내는 일이 많아졌는데 결국은 Catherine과 싸우게 된다. Catherine은 Heathcliff가 그녀의 친구이긴 하지만 그가 결코 Isabella가 사랑할 만한 사람은 되지 못한다고 충고를 하지만 Isabella는 그 말을 믿지 않는다. Nelly역시 그가 좋지 않은 사람이라고 충고하지만 이 충고 또한 받아들이지 않는다.
그 후 Heathcliff가 찾아왔을 때, Catherine은 Isabella의 손을 붙잡고 Isabella가 그를 좋아하고 또 그런 그녀를 Catherine이 괴롭히고 있어서 자신이 Heathcliff가 좋지만은 않은 사람이라는 것을 알려주었다고 말하자 수치심을 느낀 Isabella는 Catherine의 손을 손톱으로 할퀴고 나가버린다. 이 일에 Heathcliff는 무관심한 반응을 보이고 오히려 Isabella가 Edgar의 상속인인 것에 관심을 표하자 Catherine은 그 재산들은 Heathcliff의 것이 될 수 없다고 경고한다. 이런 모습을 지켜보던 Nelly는 앞으로 닥칠 불행을 예견하는 듯 보인다.

2. 중요장면

1) 192쪽 1행∼7행
A charming introduction to a hermit's life! Four weeks' torture, tossing and sickness ! Oh, these bleak winds and bitter, northern skies, and impassable roads, and dilatory country surgeons! And, oh, this dearth of the human physiognomy, and, worse than all, the terrible intimation of Kenneth that I need not expect to be out of doors till spring!
: Lockwood씨는 4주 동안 시골에 격리되어 고통스럽게 앓고, 또 봄이 될 때까지 집에만 머물러야 한다는 이야기를 듣고 매우 답답하고 지루해 한다. 이러한 상황이 Nelly가 해줄 다음 이야기에 대한 그의 호기심을 더욱 증폭시키도록 만든다.

2) 195쪽 10행~14행
Catherine had seasons of gloom and silence now and then: they were respected with sympathising silence by her husband, who ascribed them th an alteration in her constitution, produced by her perilous illness; as she was never subject to depression of spirits before.
: Catherine이 가끔 침울해지면 그것이 그녀의 지병 때문일 것이라며 말없이 지켜봐 주는 Edgard의 모습에서 Catherine을 조심스레 배려하는 것을 볼 수 있으며, 그녀가 몸이 좋지 않다는 언급을 하는 부분이다.

3) 195쪽 18행~22행
It ended. Well, we must be for ourselves in the long run; the mild and generous are only more justly selfish than the domineering; and it ended when circumstances caused each to feel that the one's interest was not the chief consideration in the other's thoughts.
: Catherine과 Edgar의 행복이 서로의 사정에 따른 이기심으로 끝이 났다는 말을 함으로써 앞으로 이 부부사이에 생길 갈등에 대해 암시하고 있는 부분이다. 이 후 Heathcliff가 찾아옴으로써 그가 이 부부들에게 어떤 갈등의 실마리를 제공하지 않을까 생각한다.

4) 200쪽 12행~26행
I was amazed, more than ever, to behold the transformation of Heathcliff. He had grown tall, atheletic, well-formed man; ...................... My master's surprise equalled or exceeded mind: he remained for a minute at a loss how to adress the ploughboy, as he had called him.
: Heathcliff의 변화된 모습을 묘사함으로써 그가 이전과는 많이 달라져 있음을 나타낸다. 이렇게 달라진 그의 모습에 Edgar씨도 그를 어떻게 불러야 할지 몰라 하는데, 앞으로 달라진 모습의 Heathcliff가 어떤 일을 벌일지 호기심을 불러일으킨다.

5) 201쪽 8행∼18행
-a quick glance now and then sufficed; but it flashed back, each time more confidently, the undisguised delight he drank from hers. They were too much absorbed in their mutual joy to suffer embarrassment. Not so Mr. Edgar. He grew pale with pure annoyance.
: Heathcliff, Catherine, Edgar 사이의 삼각관계를 보여준다. Catherine는 Heathcliff와 오랜만에 만나 기뻐 어쩔 줄을 몰라 하고, 이를 바라보던 Edgar는 미칠 정도로 화가 난다.

6) 205쪽 2행∼4행
"He is reformed in every respect, apparently: quite a Christian: offering the right hand of fellowship to his enemies all around!"
: Nelly가 Heathcliff의 진짜 의도를 모르고 잘못된 판단을 하고 있음을 보여준다.

7) 205쪽 17행∼21행
But Heathcliff affirms his principal reason for resuming a connection with his ancient persecutor is a wish to install himself in quarters at walking distance from the Grange, and an attachment to the house where we lived together.
: Wuthering Heights에 세 들면서 예전에 Heathcliff를 학대한 Hindley(his ancient persecutor)와 다시 관계를 시작한다. 이 부분에서는 그 이유로 Hindley에게 복수하려는 본래의 의도가 아닌, Catherine을 만나기에 가까운 거리, Wuthering Heights에 대한 애착 등 외면적인 것들을 언급하고 있다.

8) 211쪽 2행~ 214쪽 마지막 줄
“Nelly, help me to convince her of her madness. Tell her what Heathcliff is: .........."Banish him from your thoughts, miss," I said. "He's a bird of bad omen:..........
: Catherine과 Nelly가 Isabella에게 Heathcliff의 성격을 묘사하면서 그가 결코 남편이 되기에는 무리가 있다고 설득하는 부분이다. 불행을 몰고 오는 새와 같다는 넬리의 말이 Heathcliff의 등장이 주변인들에게 어떻게 비춰지는지 보여준다.

9) 219쪽 4행∼5행
"She's her brother's heir, is she not?" he asked, after a brief silence.
: Heathcliff가 Isabella에게 관심이 있는 것이 아니라, 재산상속에 더 관심이 있는 것을 확인시켜주는 대목이다.

10) 220쪽 6행∼12행
His visits were a nightmare to me; and, I suspected, to my master also. His abode at the Heights was an oppression past explaining. I felt that God had forsaken the stray sheep there to its own wicked wanderings, and an evil beast prowled between it and the fold, waiting his time to spring and destroy.
: stray sheep은 Hindley를 evil beast는 Heathcliff를 상징하며, Heathcliff가 Hindley를 파멸의 길로 이끌 것이라고 암시하고 있다.

3. 생각거리 + 본인생각
Heathcliff의 등장은 새로운 등장은 이 이야기를 이끌어가는 Nelly에게는 두려움이었고, Thrushcross 저택에는 가족들 간에 혼란과 갈등을 일으키는 계기가 된다. Heathcliff와 Catherine은 아무 양심의 가책도 느끼지 않는다. 이런 두 사람의 자유분방한 모습은 Edgar에게는 용납되지 않는 부분이다. Heathcliff의 달라진 모습은 Nelly에게 기독교도와 같은 단정한 모습으로 잠시 착각되어지지만, 곧 그가 불행을 몰고 올 것이라고 짐작한다. 이 장에서는 뒤에 벌어질 Wuthering Heights에서의 무서운 복수와 Catherine을 둘러싼 사람들 간의 갈등이 시작되는 전환점이라고 생각한다.
10장에서는 Heathcliff에 대한 외모와 성격에 대한 묘사 부분이 많이 등장한다. 그가 이전과 어떻게 변했든 간에 그에 대한 묘사의 내용은 거의 부정적인, 예를 들면 ‘야만적이고, 불행을 몰고 다니는’ 등의 말로 표현되고 있는데, 과연 그러한 주변의 묘사가 그를 정확하게 파악하고 있는 것인지, 그가 정말로 그렇게 묘사되어야 하는 존재인지 다시 한 번 생각해 봐야 할 것 같다.
